  1. Andy Newman: but on a more positive note, the DDR won in 1974, demonstrating the inherent superiority of socialism

And, alas, its tactical and strategic ineptitude (a feature we continue to note to this day).

Whatever the result, both teams would have progressed to the next round. By winning, the DDR ensured it was in a second round group with Brazil (winners of the previous World Cup), Argentina (winners of the following World Cup), and Holland (and that’s not any old Holland but 1974 Holland). Meanwhile, the imperialist bit of Germany was consigned, by its defeat, to facing Poland, Yugoslavia, and Sweden…

John Grimshaw “Shame about Wimbledon result”. Not if you live in Milton Keynes it’s not, as i do! Time to ditch the “Dons” part of MK Dons me thinks.

  3. #3 If this was a sensible discussion I might be tempted to refer to the socio-economic category of Poland and the former Yugoslavia.

    But it’s not so I won’t :)

  4. I would just like to extend a warm Froeliche Weinachten to all supporters of the team with officially the worst record of any English club in the European Cup since the Champions League was created.

And all the best fot Sunday.

  5. It’s typical of the poor editorial standards on here these days that I can find no mention of Leyton Orient having won seven games on the spin: a club record for at least half a century.

Oh and I think tonight confirmed Chelsea fluked winning the CL.
