I get it, Stalin is the villain, I mean this is a pantomine, isn’t it? And we all have to shout, ‘Boo, hiss,’ when he appears. Isn’t Lenin a bit elderly to be the principal boy, and I don’t think his legs are good enough anyway. But, where’s Comrade Trotsky? Wasn’t he Buttons or Widow Twankey? Still, it has a rousing finale.
A topical Christmas film that I’d recommend is a “A Midnight Clear”, directed by Keith Gordon.
Based on the novel by William Wharton, who was at the Battle of the Bulge, it first came out in 1992, but wasn’t widely distributed. It was re-released last April and is available on dvd and online.
It concerns attempts at fraternisation between an anti-Nazi Wermacht unit and a US patrol, in the Ardennes during Christmas 1944.
Unlike other off-beat Christmas films, such as “Bad Santa” and “Special Exports”, it’s yet to make it onto mainstream TV.
This is where it all went wrong and is still with us today that the USSR under Stalin and his successers was anything, anything at all to do with Socialism. A country built on the mass graves of millions of ordinary workers.
I don’t agree with the sentiments but the tune and the song itself is very rousing – especially this English language version sung by Paul Robeson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtU3vUOa2sw
